Bontril
Bontril is an appetite suppressant and a central nervous system stimulant. It stimulates the satiety centre in the hypothalamus and limbic regions of the brain. Bontril works best when used in combination with a low calorie diet, behavior modification and regular exercise. The medicine is usually taken once a day [sustained release formula] or two or three times [immediate release formula] before meals on an empty stomach. Bontril is not recommended for evenings as it may cause insomnia.
Bontril Dosage
- This medicine is best taken on an empty stomach
- Sustained-release or long acting products must be swallowed whole
- Do not take Bontril more often or longer than directed. It is usually taken for 8 to 12 weeks
- Use in combination with other appetite suppressant medicine is generally not recommended
Side effects of Bontril
- Blurred vision
- Dry mouth
- Irritability
- Constipation
- Stomach upset
- Pounding heart
- Difficulty urinating
Drug Precautions
Tell doctor the patient's complete medical history
especially with problems like high blood pressure, an over-active
thyroid, glaucoma, diabetes or emotional issues. Consult
the doctor if there is a chance of pregnancy. This medication
can be habit forming and must be used with caution. Bontril
is not recommended for use in children.
Drug Interactions
- Inform the doctor if the patient is taking blood pressure medications
- Avoid stimulant drugs that many increase the heart rate
Notes:
Do not share Bontril medication with others. Store at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture. If a dose is missed do not double dose instead skip the missed dose and resume the usual dosing schedule.
